GREAT EXCITEMENT OVER MASTERS – A HOAX

072709_2201_HANSIZZLESo1.jpgNo one would ever question HORANGI’s  swing skills or ability to shoot a low round. However, with so many deciding to skip last Thursday golf, we decided to concoct a story to bring great excitement to the Birdiehunters.

I was going to keep this excitement for at least 24 hours before rendering “Arthur Andersen’s” verdict about the veracity of the facts presented, especially the “forged” Point Robert’s score card. Unfortunately, HAN spoiled the fun by sending out two emails retracting his “make-believe dreamland” achievement!

So, gents……next time, do not abandon your friends on a scheduled Thursday game. You’ll never know what “excitement” would come out of such situation.

hoax

HAN did not shoot 73. SIMON, do not enter the numbers on the scorecard on our system!

JOHN, your 2013 MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP Trophy would be presented to you by last year’s SB#1 MASTERS CHAMP – MR. LUCKY!

Have a wonderful rest of the day. It was fun while it lasted!

See you at PEACE PORTAL on Thursday!

2012 GOLF SEASON STARTS

After a dreary winter, no one doubts how eager you must all be to enjoy curvaceous contours, smooth and tantalizing shapes. Go ahead and start salivating! I am of course, referring to lush fairways, sandy white bunkers and undulating greens!

And so, our golf season that customarily begins during the month of of April, had its first official game last Saturday at Point Roberts.

Three groups that included LITTLE JOE set out on a wonderful sunny day at one of our favorite courses. When the draw for the foursomes was made, as luck would have it, EL CAPITAN was in a group of the “heavies” – the long hitters and low handicappers – RORY who seldom uses a driver even on par fives; LITTLE JOE, “sneaking long” would probably be a more appropriate nickname; and “Power Fader” BRAD.

But before we get to the nitty-gritty, let me tall you about HAN. He had a big smile as he walked off the 18th. He said, “I played well today; I hit the ball where I wanted to!” Ok, then, how did he score? Let us not get into that. You see, everyone knew that HAN’s game is starting to peak – this early. So secretly, we had a plan. (You know we are a “sinister” bunch!) How could we “neutralize” that great fluid swing? Actually no, we are just kidding!

Well, we really were not out to sabotage his great game. That is not fair! We would not, ever, even think of doing anything to cause anyone have a bad game…no, not to HAN!

However, LEE TREVINO and CHI CHI RODRIGUEZ were masters at the “psyche” game and what they say is well documented. The say things like,
“I’d pay anything to have a back swing like that!” or
“Wow, that is a fabulous shot clearing all those trees!” or
“That is a terrific ‘birdie’ chance!” or
“Two under and three to go!”
…..Anything to distract the process of concentrating and making those putts.

Well, in our group, we do have great personalities and we have a lot of fun. We have Tiger’s twin – PETER. We have our own version of – RORY. But in addition, we also have our versions of LEE and CHI CHI! They are terrific folks. However, part of the fun is knowing when they are putting on the “psyche” game. Well, HAN said he learned a valuable lesson. You see, he was paired with MARIO, ED, and…… VINCENT… hehehe! Imagine if instead of MARIO, it was CHANG L out there in HAN’s foursome. Having Lee in your group is terrific. Having both Lee and Chi Chi would be mayhem especially on your score.

You see, CHANG and VINCENT are our version of Lee Trevino and Chi Chi Rodriguez.

And that in essence was what happened to HAN’s scoring. Next time he is up with “Lee” or “Chi Chi”, he says he has a pair of ear plugs he could always wear on the course! He also promises to stay put on the green until all movements cease. I think it is a great strategy!

Now for the results last Thursday. It is daunting to play with someone who uses mostly a hybrid off the tee. RORY is probably more akin to Bubba Watson than McIlroy. He is scary long. Then, there is LITTLE JOE whose nickname should be “Mr. Consistent”. JOE probably holds the distinction of winning the most KPs. Then, there is Mr. “Power Fader”. BRAD aims for the woods left of the fairway and curves his ball down the middle

EL CAPITAN had to contend with such illustrious bunch. Actually it is quite an experience to play with those who could make par on most holes in a course. On this day, though, holes #2, #5, #9, and #18 played havoc on the foursome. At the end, though, emulating the shot-making skills of his foursome paid off. EL CAPITAN played 4 under his index to take 1st place on the first tournament of the season – better than KING KONG who had a superb game taking 2nd place; and LITTLE JOE salvaging 3rd place.

OUR MOST SENIOR MEMBER IS RECOVERING

We have missed him during the last year but we will treasure the many terrific golf outings we have had with him. His golf attribute is something to behold. He is a threat from within 150 yards and on the putting green, no one has a much better percentage of putts made.

Last Wednesday, he went under the care of a surgeon at the Royal Columbian Hospital and held at ICU for a couple of days. His wife Vicky tells me that he could be headed home in a couple of days. We are extremely encouraged by this good news. We keep ART in our thoughts and prayers for a quick return to routine. Although he now seldom plays golf, he visits the driving range on occasion as he guides his granddaughter Jordan in developing a golf swing. Let us wish him well! (ART, rightmost, is shown above with Joan and Sunny.)

THIS WEEK & NEXT, HAN IS IN CHARGE

EL CAPITAN is on his way to Orlando, Florida and will be away until next Wednesday. Your “Weatherman” HAN will be sending out notices of this Thursday’s game and next.

UPS Championship Heating up!

SEXY SENIOR COMES THROUGH

it was a bold move to get into a foursome with the top players of the Birdiehunters at Riverway on Thursday the 29th but in an effort to accommodate a guest appearance by COONEY and the rare presence of BILL, our sexy….er….senior was forced to step aside.

Starting the day with an overcast sky, MILES, KITCHI, ROGER, and ED teed off in the first group followed by COONEY, BILL, HARRY, and VINCENT.

Hot sensation “mighty” JOE, CHANG HJ, HAN, and ERNIE were last to go. As if it would be the day’s omen, the “Senior” out drove all 3 on the first hole and deposited his next shot 14 feet left of the pin. He was “on in regulation” on 6 of 9 holes putting for birdie. Make that 8 of 11 holes when he finally made birdie on the 11th hole after a near perfect KP on the par 3 11th, knocking in a 4 footer, after CHANG missed his from 5 feet.

His net 63.2 is best of the day preventing top “birdiehunter” MILES from running away with his gross 75. “Sneaky-long” VINCENT took 3rd place.

UPS CHAMPIONSHIP

The updated summary is now in this section. With MILES recording two more birdies for the day and finishing 2nd, he has taken over the lead from JOE by a slim margin (82 & 81). Third place HAN is at 61.5 while CHANG HJ has 52.5 at 4th place. It is interesting to note that the leaders have the most birdie recorded for the season.

THE BIRDIEHUNTERS OF BC

At the PAL INTERCLUB in Cagayan Feb 12-21, we are registered with this name. Confirmed to attend are ERNIE, HAN, CHANG with VINCENT, CHANG LIM at 80% probability.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Unless there are significant changes, our team has reserved all 10 rooms at Kingston Lodge, a quaint and cute place with swimming pool just minutes away from all amenities and Pueblo de Oro Golf Course. There are only 6 more larger “apartelle” available (with kitchenettes). This means that our team could possible enjoy exclusive use of their facilities during our stay there. This is a photo of the Kingston Lodge:

THEY HUNTED EIGHT BIRDS & ONE EAGLE

John broke free off his chrysalis

With an impressive round that included a birdie, a KP, and several pars, long-hitting John has been christened a certified “birdie hunter” on June 17 at Riverway. His net 63.7 was quite an accomplishment on this day that saw the most hunters out on the course. This is a bit of good news, bad news day for John. His 8th official game performance with the hunters knocks several points of his handicap index but I am sure he does not mind when he collects his loot.

Worthy of the Best Shots of the Day is Chang HJ’s eagle on the first par 5 of the back 9 (13th hole) and El Capitan’s eagle putt on the same hole which gave him an easy birdie. For the near super-senior to have had the chance for the eagle putt was quite a feat – the result of a great drive and long fairway shot onto the green.

NEAR PERFECT ATTENDANCE TODAY

Bill’s ailing shoulder prevented him from joining us while Roger had to deal with Telus installation at home. Otherwise we would have had a full house.

Nonetheless, we welcome Cesar, joining us for the first time, and Tylor who is making his 2nd appearance.

BIRDIES HONOR ROLL

Seven (7) birdies and one (1) eagle were recorded today, the most ever collected in a long time. Here are the particulars:

The race for the UPS CHAMPIONSHIP is on and our most successful “birdie hunter” leads as he is the most prolific hunter and accurate KP shooter. With his 14.5 points from the last game at Peace Portal, he adds 12 more points today to come up on top with 26.5 points.

Trailing behind are ERNIE and JOHN with HAN, CHANG HJ and HIDE not too far behind. Obviously, accurate shooting (for birds, eagles, KPs) earns fabulous points even when not winning the day’s jackpot.

SKINS AND KP – INCREDIBLE STATISTICS

It is quite unbelievable and daunting to determine the winners of this competition which is based upon winning with a par and a maximum of three holes carryover. Simon, our new Handicap Lieutenant did a fairly good job reconciling the total skins won. It was especially difficult today because of the number of birdies made. Expect an “audited” version of the tabulations.

Sonny and Joe opted out of the skins game. (With Joe’s two birdies, the damage could have been more expensive.

NEXT TOURNAMENT – THURSDAY AT KINGS LINKS

With the pleasant reputation and goodwill we have established with golf courses, we are rewarded with guaranteed tee times at fabulous rates. DON’T MISS ATTENDING NEXT WEEK!

What rain?

RAIN FORECAST? HAVE FAITH

Sunny calls, “Are we playing today; it is going to rain?”

Chang asked the same thing.

Simon notes: “Forecast is for rain on Thursday.”

Roger totally forgets the day.

Those who showed up yesterday (Thursday, May20) were treated to a wonderful day of golf at Riverway. Umbrellas were not needed as the clouds lifted and the sun came out. The “projected rain” came while the boys were at the clubhouse after the game.

Tough luck you had to sulk at home or the office, crocheting a new scarf, or watching TV!

You missed a 5 birdie performance by Chang HJ!

SCOTLAND GOLF ANYONE?

Those who have followed the British Open know all about Turnberry Golf Resort in Scotland. Located in South Ayrshire on the rugged coast, it comprises three links golf courses, a golf academy, a five star hotel with lodge and cottage accommodations. It was the site of the 2009 British Open where in a playoff, Stewart Cink spoiled Tom Watson’s bid to be the oldest to win a major.

The biggest challenge of the course is not only the incredible bunkers but the howling wind and unpredictable weather.

ERNIE, SIMON, HARRY, JOHN, VINCENT, and HAN had a taste of Scotland golf last Thursday at Riverwayberry!

Sean asked, “Are you sure you want to play today?” Strange question coming from the golf pro. He knew something we did not. We ask him if it was OK to play five and four. Without hesitation he said, “yes”.

Well, we played six! It was not until the 10th hole when we let the following foursome ahead. They were seniors.

It was great to see other diehards on the course.

The 11th hole par three which measured 109 tells the story. I hit a full eight (8) iron and I was short of the green. The howling wind that must have driven the temperature to 100 below zero blew eastward with blinding ferocity that limited hard hitting SIMON’s drive to 175 yards max. He was the only one to hit the green in three on the par 5 #13th hole (driver, driver, three wood!) Not even a 9 iron from 90 yards was sufficient in the approach.

Nonetheless, the skin & KP game made the day exciting. With six players, it was tough to win a skin except for Han who was top sniper for the day.

SIMON got the win for the day but let us not talk about the scores, ok?

MAYFAIR LAKES THIS THURSDAY AT 8:30

Fair weather has sufficiently improved conditions at the course. The greens are still some of the best around. CONFIRM EARLY.

BLAME THE WEATHERMAN … BLAME SOMEBODY

When Cheng checked in early at Riverway, he was told that there were no times reserved for the BIRDIEHUNTERS! They were ready to bring in the lynch mob and hang “the Captain” on a tomato tree.

But our nice, pretty, and kind Lori (the golf pro at Riverway) did not want any part of the club stained with royal blood and said, “Boys, get on the tee with the 1st foursome, followed by the next, and so forth; we’ll get you out!”

Would that ever happen to any other golf society but the BirdieHunters? Our reputation for living up to our tee time reservation has saved us from sulking back at the office on a nice golfing day.

The prediction of a warm sunny day that turned into a gloomy dark day may have contributed to our good luck. As well, the admonishment of being there at 8 am rewarded us with quite a pleasant day after all.

A REQUEST

Through our Google Group confirmation system, we have been able to correctly reserve ample tee times (or cancel any within 48 hours in advance). With the active golfing season almost upon us, let us make sure of the following:

  1. When confirmed to play, you are expected to be there at least half an hour before actual tee time.
  2. Cancellation of confirmation less than 48 hours (except for emergencies or contingencies) is DETRIMENTAL to our club (the Captian could be sent to Siberia, if not sentenced to flagellation – you don’t want any of that!)
  3. Our times are guaranteed through a Credit Card and courses demand 48 hour cancellation notice or else….

Cancellation of participation less than 12 hours is inconsiderate of others who are looking forward to your pleasant company (and your skins payout), as well as the joy of seeing your face! (My name is Abraham Lincoln.)

SOMETHING WENT WRONG YESTERDAY

Take yesterday’s situation. Something went awry. We were granted tee times for March 25 but I was alerted that the greens were being punched on March 22 and 23. That is why we switched to Kings Links. A request was made to move the tee times for March 25 to April 1. Since such request was made on March 19, it is possible that the tee sheet may have been unavailable that far in advance and our times were missed. Nonetheless, the important thing is that we were not refused play.

Unfortunately, because of this and some last minute cancellations (of participation), Bill who was last to arrive at the course saw the 2nd foursome already on the tee and chose to return home. We were all sorry to see that happen and chatted about it after the game.

THE WINNERS

After all was said and done, LITTLE JOE’s return spoiled PETER’s 2010 debut. Joe was the day’s most consistent player. Helped by a birdie on the front nine’s most difficulty hole #7, Joe played a net 72 which was good enough for the win.

HARRY who rushed away after the game did not have a chance to celebrate his 2nd place win. He also got a birdie when he drilled his 3rd shot within 24 inches on the par 5 #5 hole.

SIMON recorded the only other birdie on the par 3 #15 with the tee placed back and the pin tucked away at the top of the green.

NEXT WEEK APRIL 8

We will go back to RIVERWAY. Point Robert’s greens are being aerated next week; Kings Links is still windy; North View’s early bird rate is $45 but it is available only before 8 am. Thus, we are on for 7:52 am and there are 3 times available. Suggested arrival: 7:30 am.

OUR FEATURED VIDEO

GREAT COURSE, WRONG COURSE

It was an incredible day. Winds were calm. Greens were lush and smooth. The scene was idyllic.

And VINCENT, HARRY, SUNNY, ED, CHANG HJ, SIMON, and ERNIE were raring to get out and play a tight round with plenty of birdies.

At Kings Links! And it was not like that scenario on the TV channel where the ladies are playing their 3rd LPGA tournament; and where Ai Miyazato is trying to continue her winning streak to three.

Sunny walked outside the pro shop; stuck his wet finger in the air; and said, “Let’s play golf!”

Harry grimaced, “No! No! No! It’s wet!” But the boys, deprived of the game, relented and went out on the course with light drizzle that soon deteriorated into the horrible prediction that was supposed to take place ONLY IN THE AFTERNOON. But the weatherman is like a vacuum – sucks!

Just the same, to make it interesting the boys played skins and KP. Harry won two as he parred the 2nd hole par 5. ED chipped in for a birdie on the 4th hole par 3. Ernie surrendered another 3 skins to Ed when he rushed a 9 footer for par on the 9th hole. Simon and Ernie’s tee shot for KP on the par 3 5th hole were less than 2-inch apart and too close to call to declare a winner.

When it was over, Harry and Ed took the loot and left us all panhandling. “Brother can you spare a dime?”

Meanwhile, our favorite LPGA pro is at even par.

RIVERWAY next THURSDAY, APRIL 1

We are back at Riverway next week. Be there at 8 am so we can start early. Please, please, please, CONFIRM.

Chang HJ Blazes Riverway

If his first game of the year is to be any indication of what we may have to expect from CHANG HJ, we are in for a treat! With two consecutive birdies on #12 and #13, he erased his two bogies on the front nine at Riverway. He kept his excellent play at par all the way home for a 72 total for the day. Whenever he missed the green, his next shot was always hugging the hole for an easy par except for the 17th hole when he left himself 25 feet short of the pin. Simon and Ernie his playing partners were thinking that “he might finally have a bogie”. Not! He drained the long putt for a “routine par”, keeping his perfect score.

BIRDIEHUNTERS’ MICKELSON

Dangerous KingKong (HARRY) minimized mistakes to come in 2nd. He was chipping and putting to avoid triple bogies. Playing with Ed and Eugene, he had little pressure along the way as his usual skins, KPs, and Nassau partners were teamed up elsewhere.

SIMON NOW A FULL PLEDGED BIRDIE HUNTER

After chunking a few short approaches on #1 for a horrible 7, SIMON chips in for a birdie 3 from the back fringe of the par 4 2nd hole. He and CHANG birdied the par 5 13th hole when they dunked their approaches 6 feet from the pin. (They had 4 birdies between them.) Eugene had the only other birdie of the day.

Merry Christmas to All

The BIRDIE HUNTERS 2009 GOLF EXTRAVAGANZA

What a fabulous golfing season we have had in 2009. There are too many highlights to mention; too many achievements; too many fun filled activities on and off the golf course. And then there are milestones. Wedding bells chimed for the Wijanta Family. Harry the King Kong Ng and Lucy became grandparents.

We made more friends during the summer as we experimented on a weekend of hunting birds, playing with Miles and the Vancouver Golf Association.

We had the Team Match Play championship and the UPS Championship.

Sunny built a home in Palm Springs and another one near Marine Drive. Peter spent months in China secretly taking golf lessons. Although he says he is the twin brother of Tiger, he is now recanting the claim as the Tiger is embroiled in a scandal. “The 12 days of Christmas” is being rewritten as “The 12 Ladies of Tiger”.

Ed travelled to Costa Rica, California; Miles got himself gallivanting in Davao. Chang, Ernie, & Chang had smashing time in Davao during the PAL INTERCLUB. Art is officially a septuagenarian, having celebrated his 80th birthday. He is now gunning to shoot his birthday number. Joe and Ernie were victims of equipment theft. Our handicap system crashed! Hee Jauw is our best golfer with a 6.7 index. Hide had to nurse shoulder injury.

Harry and Lucy are in New York for the whole month of December to celebrate the new addition to their family. Ernie is on his way to Palm Springs, Indian Wells, Miramonte Resort and Spa for the rest of the month.

Renee is our MUSE OF THE YEAR for being such a kind lady to us. I am sure you all have your own sweet recollections of the golf summer 2009.

Now many of us are looking forward to the BEST GOLF EXCURSION anywhere – the PAL INTERCLUB in February, 2010 at Cagayan de Oro. Chang, Ernie, Miles, Vincent, Ed are leading the troop. Better get in on the action and plan to be away Feb 12 to Mar 1, 2010!

Meanwhile, Have A Merry Christmas!
