MERRY CHRISTMAS & A FABULOUS GOLFING NEW YEAR 2015

As the year draws to a close, 20130509_083103_1we reflect upon the great year of golf we have had.

There are many outstanding achievements during the year. Probably the most impressive one is the incredible year HAN has had.020101_000000_import_002

From a barefoot stance a few years ago with a 14 index, he has risen to the top with a 9! He used to be even with Joe. Now he must spot Joe 3 strokes. How’s that for a great leap! No one could come close to his UPS lead for the year!

20120214_185139_We woke up a “sleeping giant”!

Could this merely be a coincidence? Take a look at this:

edited---IMG_0706

The guy who is always clamouring for “more strokes” in a Nassau and skins game is often “quietly” (that is an exaggeration) counting his winnings in most matches. He does not want to call attention to his scoring ability and often clings to his “I’m just lucky” expression, which of course, we all know as BS. Oh, we should reverse that and call him Mr. SB#1! In case you are wondering who that is, let me provide you a little reminder:

020101_000000_import_005Maybe it has something to do with the “hugs and kisses” he receives before going out to a game of golf:

100815_183158_importThere is another event that is worth mentioning in order to motivate the “guys singing the blues” to take lessons from Sean Foley (now that Tiger has fired him) or Hank Haney. The BLUES have now lost more than 3 times in a row in our RYDER CUP MATCH PLAY. Their new 2015 CAPTAIN DANNY, has his work cut out for him. He may have to do something about one of his players who plays like he sings (the blues):harry

harry-1Could 2015 be the year that he would soon “come out of the closet” – (now stop thinking like that!) – and live up to his King Kong potential?

Calvin and Hobbes Laughing(This is no laughing matter at all!)

Another significant event in the year is one that pertains to the loss of one of our members to Cebu Country Club…or is it the Pueblo…Riviera? The latest news is that he is now clamouring for dual citizenship – Philippines:

IMG_0077

In a recent PAL INTERCLUB captain’s meeting, we are told that he had provided touring services to ED and others visiting Cagayan de Oro!

Is it true that he now owns a few condos in the Island? Condos as in buildings; not Durex! Although I am certain he must have a supply of those, too!

One thing we will surely miss in the new year is our participation in the interclub. The event has always been a lot of fun…a lot of food … entertainment…. and the IMG_0105IMG_0100spoils. Below is how HEE JEAW explains it.

There are a few issues about this. There was delay in announcing the event. What usually take place on the 1st Thursday of October was held more than a month later – November 13 – which is so close to the event itself. What this meant was that there was little time to plan. On a long (13 hour flight), it takes months to make sure of reserving flights at preferred rates.
EL KAPITAN did not receive the international (preferred) flight package for the event until the middle of December – which is way too late. Now a new directive to all Team Captains is that the venue has been changed from Cagayan to Cebu! Imagine the hotel and transport bookings that now have to be cancelled! Imagine scrambling for hotel reservations in Cebu this late in the game! So much for the GOLF EXCURSION!

IMG_0608But that does not mean that we have abandoned the idea of an exotic golf excursion somewhere. We are now working on our 2016 golf excursion. Announcements about this event will be made early in the year – before the summer 2015 golf start. PREPARE TO JOIN US!

I am sure you have other recollections for the year….SHARE THEM WITH US! You can easily do that by adding your comments below.

Finally, let me share with your our family Christmas Card below!

2014 MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP UPSET?

BLUES WERE FAVORITE TO WIN 2014 RYDER CUP MATCH PLAY but……

In spite of timely “birdie binges” by HARRY and MILES to wrestle 1 point for the BLUES with the first match of the day, the GOLDS take the lead at the conclusion of the 2-ball, best ball at MAYFAIR LAKES adding another point to their 1st game lead. GOLDs are now up 3 points with the Championship Singles matches scheduled for Thursday (August 7) at Point Roberts starting at 8 am.

KING KONG rolls in a 25 footer on the #1 handicap hole par 4 3rd for a net 1 birdie on the hole. It wipes out HAN’s birdie on #2. With GOLDs down by 2 going into the 8th hole, EL KAPITAN brings the GOLDs even with superb play starting with a net 3 on the 7th hole. On the 10th and 11th hole,  ERNIE/HAN duet pulled away 2 up only to lose them on the remaining holes as KING KONG nearly holed a chip shot on the difficult par 3 15th. MILES’ birdie on the 16th  sealed a 1 point lead for the BLUES.

However, that was it for the BLUES! CHRIS and DAVID were fabulous together as they steamrolled BILL and DANNY. DANNY’s gross 78 was all for naught against CHRIS’ brilliant game as he shot 41 in the front 9. They coasted the rest of the way. Match is even!

GOLD’s captain MARIO and SIMON took on BLUE’s CAPTAIN VINCENT and LITTLE JOE. Two birdies propelled BIRDIEHUNTER’s “Ben Arda” MARIO to a 2nd place finish for the net tournament of the day (behind CHRIS).

GOLDs take 1 more point into the tournament finals next week.

2014-RYDER-CUP-2ND

WOULD A 3-POINT LEAD BY THE GOLDs GET THE BLUEs SINGING AGAIN?

Well, they have a great Karaoke star in their team – KING KONG. I hear that HE and VINCENT are preparing to do a duet cover of BOBBY VINTON’s “Lonely, I’m Mr. Lonely“! MILES apparently would be playing the guitar to accompany his teammates!

SCOTT missed today game but his return next week might be good new for the BLUES. Long-hitter Jin had expressed interest in joining us soon, too. He could be drafted for the singles’ championship. HOWARD, SUNNY, SHUBASH, RORY, GERRY, CHANG L, (who knows who else!) might make the final matches up quite interesting. It all depends on the two captain’s strategies.

A big turnout should certainly help the BLUEs as they need to win at least FIVE matches to have a chance. The GOLDs only need to win 3 matches to close out the 2014 RYDER CUP MATCH PLAY in their favour.

LUNCHEON CELEBRATION

Traditionally, under the spirit of sportsmanship, the winners get a “lunch treat” from their worthy adversaries. To make sure everyone has a good time, Point Roberts is arranging for “roasted chicken” & other goodies for lunch after the game! (Sunny would love that!)

CHAMPIONSHIP COLORS

Let us have a celebration of colours. COME play in your team’s colour! Those without team assignment, BRING two t-shirts: Gold and Blue.  Hehehe!

GREAT GOLFING WEATHER

With the fairways getting firmer, long hitters are starting to flex their muscles. It is a little perplexing, however, that “birdies” were few at Point Roberts. HOWARD and JOE got two each.

EAGLES CLUB

Now there are two members of this elite club. MARIO joins DANNY in this department as he dunked his 3rd shot at the par 5 3rd hole for an eagle. Did he skull a hybrid? Just Kidding. Actually, he has been a “devil chipper” as many of his short approaches on the course have been on the mark!

TOUR #10 – Point Roberts WINNERS

TOUR-#10---Point-Roberts-WINNERS

From left to right: SIMON – 2nd place; JOE – 1st place; HOWARD – 3rd place

JOE has ascended in the gross score leaderboard as he continues to score well. He delights in those firm master-like greens as he apparently has been sinking them from all over the place. SIMON minimized his unforced errors at Point Roberts to claim 2nd place.

It is great to see HOWARD finally make it in the winners’ circle. He may not be as long as the other two but he is probably one of the best in scrambling and putting!

TERRIFIC SCORING AT KINGS LINKS

TOUR #8 – Kings Links WINNERS

WINNERS---TOUR#8

1st place – MARIO (center); 2nd place – KING KONG (left); 3rd place – HAN (right)

If you can putt; if you can stay away from the rough; then you can score at Kings Links! Now then, if you add luck to that, then you are unbeatable. That seemed to be the case with our Tour #8 winners. I think we could add a nickname to the top prize winner – “Sneaky long”. Now, now, we are referring to his tee shots, silly! MARIO must have been studying Ben Arda’s tapes. In case you are not aware, Ben Arda was the Philippines best golfer during his time. At only 5’7″ tall,  Ben was the first Filipino to qualify for the Masters and the US Open. Diminutive as he was in stature, he could smash his drives with unimaginable distance earning the nickname “Bantam Ben” and “Toy Tiger”!

Meanwhile KING KONG HARRY erased his 9 on the opening hole par 5 (2nd) by putting together a series of pars.  He settled down after a few holes and kept his “unforced errors” to a minimum to  come in with a terrific score for 2nd place.

Meanwhile, it seems that HAN has contracted BRINKS Security to handle his bank loot from all the tournaments. He has been the winningest member so far. So don’t be alarmed when he shows up at Point Roberts with armed guards.

2014 Multiple Winners

TOUR #7 – Riverway WINNERS
WINNERS---TOUR#7

1st place – EL KAPITAN (center); 2nd place – DAVID (left); 3rd place – RORY (right)

It just seems that the strategy of “keeping mistakes to a minimum” had paid off for EL KAPITAN, whose 5-under front nine carried his total score decently for a narrow win at RIVERWAY. Six players were within less than 1 point of each other last Thursday. DAVID is 2nd  with his net 69.8. RORY edged HARRY by .1 point to take 3rd place. HAN and VINCENT were .3 and .4 behind!

PROBLEMS with SUMMER RULES in EFFECT

On the par 4 12th hole at Riverway, someone’s ball rolled through the green and his ball was nowhere to be found. Upon closer inspection, the ball was found in a ground indentation at the rough perimeter of the green. His playing partners declared that no relief could be taken and that the ball must be played as it lies. The player who happened to playing well, protested but could not identify the rule that could have given him relief.

IT PAYS TO KNOW THE RULES

The rule that would have given the player a free drop (relief – no stroke penalty) is Rule 25-1 Abnormal Ground Condition which is defined as follows:52904_ROG_RULESGOLF_TXT.qxd

“An abnormal ground condition is either casual water, ground under repair or a hole, cast or runway made by a burrowing animal, a reptile or a bird.” There are many other detailed illustrations of AGC in rule interpretations. Clearly, if a ball lies in an unusual ground indentation or ground under repair – whether marked or not – the ball may be lifted and dropped without penalty. Tire marks on soft ground left by ground workers are a good example of “unusual ground condition”. A hole left by a pulled stake anywhere around the green or fairway area is also considered AGC!

TOUR #6 – Point Roberts WINNERS

WINNERS-TOUR#61st place – HAN (center); 2nd place – HARRY (left); 3rd place – DANNY (right)

They have to be happy, especially HAN and DANNY – multiple winners so far in the 2014 Golf Tour. These guys are not just golfers; they are musically inclined! HAN is a Cello professor and frequent guest soloist, conductor in some renown musical events in South Korea. HARRY has his swooning fans in some karaoke clubs in Richmond. DANNY plays the cellophane on a comb! He makes quite a racket performing!

HAN has Point Roberts mastered as he consistently shoots in the low 80’s nowadays – in the top 5 gross scorers for the club. HARRY has mastered the craft of keeping his index “high enough”, in preparation for the next Masters Tournament. SB#! contender for sure. DANNY is also in the top 5!

The big guns were silenced at Point Roberts. Is it because it is our first game with “Summer Rules” in effect?

TREAT FOR THE DAY

A Husband takes his wife to play her first game of golf. Of course, the wife promptly hacked her first shot right through the window of the biggest house adjacent to the course.

The husband cringed, ‘I warned you to be careful! Now we’ll have to go up there, find the owner, apologize and see how much your lousy drive is going to cost us.’

So the couple walked up to the house and knocked on the door. A warm voice said, ‘Come on in.’

When they opened the door they saw the damage that was done: glass was all over the place, and a broken antique bottle was lying on its side near the pieces of window glass.

A man reclining on the couch asked, ‘Are you the people that broke my window?’

‘Uh…yeah! , sir. We’re sure sorry about that,’ the husband replied.

‘Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you.. You see, I’m a genie, and I’ve been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years.
Now that you’ve released me, I’m allowed to grant three wishes. I’ll give you each one wish, but if you don’t mind, I’ll keep the last one for my self.’

Wow, that’s great!’ the husband said. He pondered a moment and blurted out, ‘I’d like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life.’

‘No problem,’ said the genie ‘You’ve got it, it’s the least I can do. And I’ll guarantee you a long, healthy life!’

‘And now you, young lady, what do you want?’ the genie asked.

‘I’d like to own a gorgeous home in Manhattan complete with servants, and a winter mansion in Palm Springs!’ she said.

‘Consider it done,’ the genie said. ‘And your homes will always be safe from fire, burglary and natural disasters!’

‘And now,’ the couple asked in unison, ‘what’s your wish, genie?’
‘Well, since I’ve been trapped in that bottle, and haven’t been with a woman in more than a thousand years, my wish is to spend some romantic time with your wife.’

The husband looked at his wife and said, ‘Gee, honey, you know we both now have a fortune, and all those houses. What do you think?’

She mulled it over for a few moments and said, ‘You know, you’re right. Considering our good fortune, I guess I wouldn’t mind, but what about you, honey?’

You know I love you sweetheart,’ said the husband.I’d do the same for you!’

So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying each other.

The genie was insatiable.

After about three hours of passionate encounter, the genie rolled over and looked directly into her eyes and asked, How old are you and your husband?’

‘Why, we’re both 35,’ she responded breathlessly.

‘No Kidding,’ he said.

‘Thirty-five years old and you both still believe in genies?’

2013 BBC MASTERS LEADERBOARD

JOHN SIZZLES

No one would ever compare JOHN to VIJAY SINGH. VJ spends hours on the driving range nearly every day before a tournament. He is also observed to spend a lot of time on the practice greens. JOHN on the other hand arrives on the golf course seconds before tee-off. He does not care much about practicing on the putting green or sharpening his patented lob open wedge full swing.052011_1806_RYDERCUPMAT2.jpg

But there are similarities. VJ is tall. He could drive the ball long off the tee. VJ loves food. Unfortunately, beyond these, I can’t think of any other similarity. Oh, of course, there is another one: VJ has contended on many tournaments, and actually has had his share of wins.

But here he is on the 1st game of our 2013 BBC Masters blowing the entire field with a NET 61.1 – a tournament record for sure. Many would now be speculating how this could be possible. The SB#1 crown debate once again surfaces. Would JOHN be a runaway candidate for the infamous award? It remains to be seen.

Contending for the same award would be SIMON whose NET 67.7 nipped MILES by a whisker.

However, this is a TWO-DAY-TOTAL tournament and The Birdiehunters are never short of excitement.  I have heard someone say, “Anything can happen”!102210_1649_2010UPSCHAM5.jpg

But for now, JOHN has a tight grip on the 2013 BBC MASTERS trophy. MR. LUCKY, 2012 MASTERS champ could possibly be handing JOHN two titles. (Any clue what the other one is?)

2013 BBC MASTERS LEADERBOARD

The leader board
The leader board

Omitted from the above list is HARRY, who would be returning next week from his crocheting and knitting classes.

The list above indicates the possibilities. SIMON, MILES, and RORY are still within striking distance of the lead. ERNIE, VINCENT, ED, are “long shot” contenders. The numbers to the right of the list indicate the “shot difference” from the leader. If JOHN were to shoot NET PAR on the 2nd game, SIMON and MILES would need to shoot 7 below par to overtake the lead. However, if JOHN records a NET +6 above par, SIMON or MILES need only to play NET PAR to have a chance to win.

The others who have yet to get their 1st game done (at Kings Links, next week) now have a “target”.

What are the chances of wrestling the title from JOHN? It remains to be seen.

2013 RYDER CUP FIREWORKS at Point Roberts

BBC RYDER CUP HISTORY

It was four years ago when the Birdiehunters established a local team Ryder Cup Match Play.  The group was divided into two competing teams – ROOSTERS and TURKEYS. You can view the results of the 1st tournament here: https://birdiehunters.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/roosters-bar-b-qued-the-turkeys/

MATCH PLAY 2009

Celebration of the final matches was held at #9 Restaurant in Richmond.MATCH PLAY 2009-1

SUBSEQUENT MATCHES

Later on, team names became BLUEs and GOLDs.

In 2011, the BLUEs were winners by a margin of points (147-144) against the GOLDs. Leading scorers were EL CAPITAN for the BLUEs and HAN for the GOLDs.

MATCH PLAY 2011

They celebrated and toasted the winners at the Riverway Restaurant.

MATCH PLAY 2011-1FINAL SINGLES MATCHES FOR 2013

The Championship Match at Point Roberts is looming to be the most exciting as the two captains, BRAD – BLUEs and HAN – GOLDs had been jostling with the final pairings.

Never in its early history has the BBC RYDERs CUP been electrifying since a new match rule is introduced patterned after the PGA rules – winning matches are rewarded ONE POINT (1) toward the championship; with individual points counting only to break a TIE. It makes for an exciting finish as the two teams have 5 points apiece leading to the final singles matches. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBILITIES?

 Here are the scheduled matches.

Microsoft Word - Document7

The BLUEs Captain has played one of the most cunning strategies in gamesmanship – subtly “conceding defeat” against his counterpart. (Did you read his emails?)

The detailed analysis above certainly favors the BLUEs to win the 2013 Ryder Cup Match Play. HAN would have to do some pep talk tomorrow to inspire his team to overcome the odds.

WHATEVER the outcome, this would surely be a most exciting finish in our match play tournaments.

MAKE SURE YOU STAY FOR THE CELEBRATIONS

UNTHINKABLE, IMPROBABLY, but not IMPOSSIBLE

When HARRY’s BLUE team posted a 48-43 lead over VINCENT’s YELLOW team on the first day’s singles matches at Kings Links and then followed it up with a 13-10 GOLD shellacking at Mayfair Lakes, the BLUES started celebrating. HARRY’s BLUES had all the big guns firing on both days.

SIMON, always inspired when playing against EL CAPITAN, trounced the latter with a margin of 11-5. JOE manhandled RORY 8-2, and HARRY squeezed by the YELLOW’s captain VINCENT 9-8. Only two of the GOLD’s posted winning scores: BILL unexpectedly humbled the swashbuckling, long driving, relative rookie of the BLUES, JOHN, with a 9-2 margin. SHUBASH took a point from LU 8-7. HORANGI against BRAD and MILES against CHANG HJ split their matches evenly. Game ONE belonged to the BLUES 48-43.

In the TWO-BALL-BEST-BALL, the BLUE’s continued to steam roller their opponents taking 13 points against 10 and increased their leads to 61 against 53.

Unexpected contingencies forced the cancellation of the 2-ball match. Nearly down and out, the YELLOW team were down to the SINGLES matches at RIVERWAY last Thursday. At MacDonald the two opposing captains conferred before the CHAMPIONSHIP match to determine the pairings. It was almost an unthinkable and improbable situation for the YELLOW team. Out-manned on the last day of the RYDER CUP MATCH, what chances are there for such raucous and inspired BLUE team to surrender their lead?

There was only one thing in VINCENT’s mind: “The Americans led until the very last day. Olazabal reminded his team that this version of the RYDER’S CUP was to be dedicated to the memory of SEVE BALLESTEROS. It may be unthinkable, improbable, but it is never impossible.”

And so, in a fashion as dramatic as the EUROPEAN’s comeback on the last day of the RYDER’s CUP, the GOLD TEAM (with a capital G, and no longer the YELLOWs) roared back like a two-storey tsunami and took the BLUES to the deep blue sea with their captain, VINCENT, taking 9-2 from LU. ERNIE out-duelled the BLUE’s captain KING KONG 8-4. RORY was tough against SIMON 6-5. CHANG found his A game to dispose of our top-ranked MILES 8-5. However, what was most intriguing, if not surprising is the complete annihilation of HORANGI by BRAD with a 10-5 margin.

Thus, the GOLD tsunami silenced and humbled the BLUES with an incredible 41-21 difference when all the GOLD’s took every single match on the last day in an amazing comeback pulling in 94 points against 82.

TWO CROWNS AT STAKE

On Thursday, we will conclude our “formal” season with two trophies at stake – the MASTERS and the UPS. The top 7 players in the UPS have a mathematical chance to win it all on this last day.

The latest UPS statistics show HORANGI leading JOE and CHANG. However, anyone of the top seven could wrestle the crown if they could put it all together at Mayfair Lakes.

At the same time, the 2nd and championship game of the MASTERS will also be hotly contested. The MASTERS leaderboard:

VINCENT –   66.7
CHANG HJ – 69.0
RORY –          69.7
ERNIE –         70.3
SIMON –       73.6
LU –               74.5
BRAD –          74.8
HARRY –       76.6
MILES –        77.3
JOHN –          80.2
HAN –            81.2

“You’ll never know” goes the saying and that may be quite possible with this colorful group. For instance, how could the UPS leader possibly be at the bottom of the MASTERS’ ladder?

We tee it off at MAYFAIR LAKES starting at 8:45 am. Lunch party will follow at a select venue to be announced after the game.

BLUEs lead GOLDs by a slim margin of 5 points

The PGA may have their Ryder Cup Tournament this week; the Birdiehunters also have their annual “Ryder Cup Match Play” Competition over the next four weeks.

The two team captains met this morning prior to today’s match at Kings Links in order to establish their respective team members. Essentially, what happened at Riverway last week did not provide HARRY and VINCENT an equitable opportunity to select their team members based on cumulative handicap total, resulting in one team ending up with a very large sum total and a significant variance (15+). (The cumulative total handicap variance between the two team was greater than 15+. Had the line-up been allowed to stand, one team would be greatly disadvantaged throughout the four matches.)

The meeting this morning was to balance out each team so that the resulting handicap variance would be less than 10. The two team captains consulted the handicap listing and mutually agreed to a fair “trade”. They also took into consideration the number of regular players to assure with certainty that there would be a minimum of 6 matches until the completion of the championship.

They also both agreed that today’s singles matches would officially start the tournament.

The results today validate the wisdom of the two captains. The point difference between the (leading) BLUE TEAM against the GOLD TEAM is merely 5 points; 48-43 total. Last week’s results, had they been allowed to stand, was a point difference of more than 28. That would have tainted the entire tournament as there would only be two chances of the losing team from recovering: SLIM and NONE.

The BLUES: JOHN, MILES, HAN, LU, JOE, HARRY, and SIMON should enjoy the week because next week, the GOLDS: BILL, CHANG HJ, BRAD, SHUBASH, RORY, VINCENT, and ERNIE promise to take them to the cleaners.

TODAY’s BRILLIANT PLAY and SHOT OF THE DAY

There has to be incredible incentive for SIMON to play his best when he plays against EL CAPITAN. On the Par 5 7th hole. he drilled two shots to get on the green in two for an easy birdie. He added a few more birdies to his round of 81. I am sure Brad is shaking his head as SIMON’s handicap index dropped a mere .4 points! “Highway robbery” he is shouting as this happens to be SIMON’s 2nd consecutive round in the low 80’s. Sandbagger what?

For his effort, he collects the TWO KINGS LINKS Prizes for LOW NET and LOW GROSS of the day: two free green fees!

Correction: SIMON shot an 82, not an 81! (Big deal!) and he did not win the LOW GROSS. MILES did! Congratulations!

2012 GOLF SEASON STARTS

After a dreary winter, no one doubts how eager you must all be to enjoy curvaceous contours, smooth and tantalizing shapes. Go ahead and start salivating! I am of course, referring to lush fairways, sandy white bunkers and undulating greens!

And so, our golf season that customarily begins during the month of of April, had its first official game last Saturday at Point Roberts.

Three groups that included LITTLE JOE set out on a wonderful sunny day at one of our favorite courses. When the draw for the foursomes was made, as luck would have it, EL CAPITAN was in a group of the “heavies” – the long hitters and low handicappers – RORY who seldom uses a driver even on par fives; LITTLE JOE, “sneaking long” would probably be a more appropriate nickname; and “Power Fader” BRAD.

But before we get to the nitty-gritty, let me tall you about HAN. He had a big smile as he walked off the 18th. He said, “I played well today; I hit the ball where I wanted to!” Ok, then, how did he score? Let us not get into that. You see, everyone knew that HAN’s game is starting to peak – this early. So secretly, we had a plan. (You know we are a “sinister” bunch!) How could we “neutralize” that great fluid swing? Actually no, we are just kidding!

Well, we really were not out to sabotage his great game. That is not fair! We would not, ever, even think of doing anything to cause anyone have a bad game…no, not to HAN!

However, LEE TREVINO and CHI CHI RODRIGUEZ were masters at the “psyche” game and what they say is well documented. The say things like,
“I’d pay anything to have a back swing like that!” or
“Wow, that is a fabulous shot clearing all those trees!” or
“That is a terrific ‘birdie’ chance!” or
“Two under and three to go!”
…..Anything to distract the process of concentrating and making those putts.

Well, in our group, we do have great personalities and we have a lot of fun. We have Tiger’s twin – PETER. We have our own version of – RORY. But in addition, we also have our versions of LEE and CHI CHI! They are terrific folks. However, part of the fun is knowing when they are putting on the “psyche” game. Well, HAN said he learned a valuable lesson. You see, he was paired with MARIO, ED, and…… VINCENT… hehehe! Imagine if instead of MARIO, it was CHANG L out there in HAN’s foursome. Having Lee in your group is terrific. Having both Lee and Chi Chi would be mayhem especially on your score.

You see, CHANG and VINCENT are our version of Lee Trevino and Chi Chi Rodriguez.

And that in essence was what happened to HAN’s scoring. Next time he is up with “Lee” or “Chi Chi”, he says he has a pair of ear plugs he could always wear on the course! He also promises to stay put on the green until all movements cease. I think it is a great strategy!

Now for the results last Thursday. It is daunting to play with someone who uses mostly a hybrid off the tee. RORY is probably more akin to Bubba Watson than McIlroy. He is scary long. Then, there is LITTLE JOE whose nickname should be “Mr. Consistent”. JOE probably holds the distinction of winning the most KPs. Then, there is Mr. “Power Fader”. BRAD aims for the woods left of the fairway and curves his ball down the middle

EL CAPITAN had to contend with such illustrious bunch. Actually it is quite an experience to play with those who could make par on most holes in a course. On this day, though, holes #2, #5, #9, and #18 played havoc on the foursome. At the end, though, emulating the shot-making skills of his foursome paid off. EL CAPITAN played 4 under his index to take 1st place on the first tournament of the season – better than KING KONG who had a superb game taking 2nd place; and LITTLE JOE salvaging 3rd place.

OUR MOST SENIOR MEMBER IS RECOVERING

We have missed him during the last year but we will treasure the many terrific golf outings we have had with him. His golf attribute is something to behold. He is a threat from within 150 yards and on the putting green, no one has a much better percentage of putts made.

Last Wednesday, he went under the care of a surgeon at the Royal Columbian Hospital and held at ICU for a couple of days. His wife Vicky tells me that he could be headed home in a couple of days. We are extremely encouraged by this good news. We keep ART in our thoughts and prayers for a quick return to routine. Although he now seldom plays golf, he visits the driving range on occasion as he guides his granddaughter Jordan in developing a golf swing. Let us wish him well! (ART, rightmost, is shown above with Joan and Sunny.)

THIS WEEK & NEXT, HAN IS IN CHARGE

EL CAPITAN is on his way to Orlando, Florida and will be away until next Wednesday. Your “Weatherman” HAN will be sending out notices of this Thursday’s game and next.
