PEACE PORTAL TOUGH – BUT NOT FOR HIDE

HIDE EXCELS

On Wednesday afternoon at the “workshop”, we thought we were hallucinating. There he is after a long absence striking the ball just as sweet as he always did. Although he was not sure if he is in shape to get back into “tough competition with the BIRDIEHUNTERS”, he showed up at the Burger King bright and early Thursday to join Ernie and Harry for breakfast before heading to Peace Portal.

A string of pars from the 7th hole onwards and a sole miscue on the tough par 5 13th hole gave HIDE the lowest round of the day to capture 1st place in the First UPS Championship tournament. (See the Handicap and Tournament Stat page.)

His net 71.9 was a few points better than JOE’S who was alone and 2nd place ahead of HAN, who took 3rd.

WEATHER MADE COURSE TOUGHER

Peace Portal on a bright sunny summer day could get even the seasoned veteran cursing because of an errant shot. Tight tree-lined fairways, ditches, and ponds could easily test someone’s mettle and comportment. On a drizzly day like yesterday following a series of wet rainy days made the course verrrrrry looooooong.

It tested the temperament of a few who, in exasperation, invented a new curse word: putangshut or something sounding like that.

To those who enjoy friendship and camaraderie with pals; and treasure the opportunity to put in some exercise through brisk walk on the course, share laughter and kibitzing, a slight drizzle here and there is no big deal. Being with friends is far more valuable.

We are so fortunate to have many who see the glass “half full” instead of being “half empty”. Attitude after all is based not necessarily on truth but rather on “perception”. Those who value the opportunity to sharpen their playing ability enjoyed their round and tried their best – in spite of the horrible challenge of typical BC weather.

BIRDIE HONOR ROLL

JOE has caught up with SIMON in the birdie hunt and ViINCENT captured one with an 18 foot KP and birdie on the 15th par 3 hole at Peace Portal.

SKINS and KPS GAME

Hide and Han opted out of the SKP game. With the course being so tough on this day, there were few pars and 17 holes were all tied. The lone par (by ERNIE) that won 3 skins was on the par 5 11th hole. The two birdies by Joe and Vincent were on the same hole (15th) which only earned them a single skin each. HARRY and JOE
earned one skin each for their KP. TOTAL SKP for the day is only 7.

UPS CHAMPIONSHIP STATS

You will find details on the Handicap & Tournament Stats page. Leading after game 1 is JOE by virtue of his 2nd place finish, 1 birdie and 1 KP besting 1st place winner HIDE who is in 2nd place. HAN is 3rd while VINCENT’s KP and birdie puts him in 4th place.

RIVERWAY NEXT WEEK @ 8 AM – JUNE 17

Our handicap system which is CPGA, RCGA, and PGA based is updated weekly. Some may wonder why Joe’s new index is 8.6, or why Hide’s is 14.1. Joe has had only 11 games in the system. In Hide’s case, he only has 2. We may have to get Hide to agree to an amended index of 11.0 (which was his index before our system crashed).
